With its spectacular flora and fauna, the underwater realm of the Canary Islands is a draw for many divers. To highlight these spectacular images, the first online underwater photographic contest in the Canary Islands was launched on 18 February 2016.
Open to underwater photographers at all levels, the Canary Islands Dive Photo Challenge has received 807 photographs from more than 120 photographers. The contest is still open, till 19 May 2016. Prizes worth a total of 25,000 Euros are up for grabs.
Besides being the first underwater photography contest, it is also a marketing campaign for the Canary Islands. The organisers hope to promote the Canary Islands as a paradise for divers and underwater photographers.
The Canary Islands: a divers' paradise
The Canary Islands as a holiday destination is very popular due to its sub-tropical climate, so tourists and divers can visit any day of the year. Its seven islands offer diverse options to suit every taste and enable all to recharge and refresh their body, mind and soul, far away from the stresses of daily life.
Amidst the lush tropical surroundings, the beaches, volcanoes, hospitable lifestyles, myriad of outdoor activities, and wide range of hotels and accommodations blend together to make the Canary Islands the perfect dream destination.
Beneath the waves, the Canary Islands is known for its good visibility of up to 30 metres and water temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius – and of course, the colourful marine life swimming against a backdrop of underwater scenery with caves and coral reefs. The regions of El Hierro, La Palma and Lanzarote have been designated as marine protected areas.
